The soccer clubs Premier Teams play in the Michigan State Youth Premier Leagues.  Our teams compete at different levels of this league depending on their standard.  The soccer club is making a concerted effort to improve the standard of our players and teams, and their competitiveness within these leagues.  We have successfully added a number of high quality coaches to our staff and we believe this is a step in the right direction.

  • Our coaching philosophy at the U13 to U14 age groups is to combine individual player development with the concept of team tactics and playing to win.  Outstanding teams at the club will be encouraged to take part in the Michigan State Cup as well as other high profile tournaments.
  • At U15 to U18 we become increasingly focused on building the team and creating a winning formula through advanced coaching and competition.  Teams at these ages are encouraged to participate in State Cup as well as other high profile tournaments both in and out of state.
  • Players who express an interest in college soccer will be given a chance to be exposed to college coaches from within Michigan; this aspect of the program is handled by our Director of Training.

U13 to U18 MID-MICHIGAN TRAINING

At these ages the clubs Mid-Michigan Teams play within the Mid-Michigan Leagues.  Each team playing at this level is allocated a club trainer who will train the team once a week and watch home games.  The clubs coaching philosophy at these ages are to focus on developing each player's individual technical and tactical ability.  We strive to improve these aspects of a soccer player's game because these are the fundamental skills that will improve the player and advance them to a greater level of play.  Players at these age groups are encouraged to advance their skills in order to challenge for places on our Premier Teams and in high school.

COACHING EDUCATION
The Midland Soccer Club recognizes that our younger players are the future of our club and that we need an encompassing developmental program.  This winter (2007-08) we have set a developmental program in place that will take our players, teams and club forward and hopefully increase our success at older age groups.  The plans for 2007-08 are as follows:

1.    Age Specific Coaches Clinics: All age group coaches will attend at least 2 clinics run by our D.O.T.  At these clinics specific goals, objectives and formations will be given to the coaches to implement in the Spring Season.

2.    Fusion Academy Training Sessions (Spring '08): All teams will attend academy training sessions once per week during the season.  Here trainers will focus on specific technical and tactical topics to improve our players.  These topics are from a pre-determined age appropriate curriculum set by our D.O.T.

3.    Fusion Premier Training Sessions (Spring '08): From here each academy team will practice twice a week with a club trainer. Teams will train together as an age group once per week; Club trainers will again work from an age appropriate curriculum.

4.    Fusion Academy Summer Camps: Age groups will attend camps together.  Trainers at these camps will work from specific age appropriate curriculums.  The focus of these camps will be carried on into the fall season.

5.    Winter Training (2007-08): This winter MSC offers the opportunity to train and prepare for the spring ’08 season at Central Michigan University. In cooperation with CMU, MSC has arranged access to the IAC turfbay at CMU. The IAC is a fully heated indoor facility with full field and multiple field capabilities.

-Training sessions for the winter have already started and will run through the last week of March. We are still accepting participants; if you are interested contact our Director of Training.

For more information or questions about our Academy Training Program please contact our Director of Training, Drew Emrich at drewemrich@midlandsoccerclub.org.

TRAVEL GOALKEEPER TRAINING

The Midland Soccer Club believes that our goalkeepers are a vital aspect of our travel teams and in order for our teams to progress our goalkeepers need to be trained to a higher level.  Travel goalkeepers are asked to attend one goalkeeper training session per week.  These sessions take the form of age group sessions and run for one hour.  Goalkeepers are run through technical aspects of position and some tactical aspects.  The goalkeeper trainers currently employed by the soccer club include:

Andrew Emrich – USSF ‘Goalkeeper’ License NSCAA GK Level II, USSF Goalkeepers License and Alma College Volunteer GK coach

Luke Tompary - Current Men's Goalkeeper for Northwood University

Our Goalkeeper trainers are of the highest quality and we believe that we have the best goalkeeper training program in the Mid-Michigan area. Goalkeeper training, all ages, meet weekly from 5:30 - 7:00pm during the training season on Thursdays. For more information or questions about the Goalkeeper training sessions and for the schedule please contact our Director of Training, Drew Emrich at drewemrich@midlandsoccerclub.org

COACHING EDUCATION

Every coach at the Midland Soccer Club is a volunteer, some who have an in-depth knowledge of the game and some have never played soccer, let a lone coached soccer.  In order to improve the standard of our coaches we provide coaching education material in a number of different forms and levels.

Recreational Coaches

For our recreational coaches we provide education material in two forms.  The first and most encompassing educational material is our age appropriate coach's manuals.  These manuals are available from the Midland Soccer Club office in CD Rom form; please pick one up at your earliest convenience.

  • U5 to U6 age group: This manual includes our clubs philosophies on coaching at these ages, team management guidelines, coaching organization, game and practice coaching procedures, a number of soccer activities and games, practice plan examples and a sample practice plan.
  • U7 to U8 age group: This manual includes all the information above in an age appropriate manor as well as a more in-depth look into player development and team formations and shape.
  • U10 age group: This manual introduces a more in-depth look into player development, the importance of small sided game and team shape.
  • U12 age group: A progression from U10 in terms of team shape and players development.  Players at this age should be exposed to more advanced skills at varying levels of pressure.
  • U14 and above age group: An introduction to 11 v 11 soccer and its implications and a more in-depth look at formations as well as concepts of team defending and attacking.

Seasonal coaching clinics are also given for recreational coaches.  These clinics are age appropriate; they cover the material included in the manual and trainers are there to answer any questions coaches may have.  Another form of educational material is web site information; please take the time to look at the links section.  Included in the links section you will find web sites that give general information as well as soccer activities.

Travel Coaches

Travel coaches at the club are offered more in terms of coaching education.  The resources we offer to these coaches include:

  • Soccer Training Manual: This training manual is all encompassing and covers all aspects of coaching youth soccer at the travel level.
  • Classroom Coaches Clinics: Age appropriate clinics are offered for all our travel coaches, which cover a variety of topics.  Topics covered include our fusion player development philosophies, goals and objectives for coaches and players, formations, small-sided games, etc.
  • Outdoor Coaches Clinics: The Director of Training runs through age appropriate session plans on specific topics requested by the travel coaches.
